Rajkumar Hirani has revealed the plot of ‘3 Idiots’ sequel, and told us that the characters of Rancho, Farhan and Raju will be going through a mid-life crisis. After having been one of Bollywood’s most acclaimed films almost 16 years ago, director Rajkumar Hirani has now shared a few details about what’s next for Rancho, Farhan and Raju in the highly anticipated sequel of 3 Idiots. In regards to the film, Hirani also said that the sequel would not go back to the college days of the three. However, it will take a completely different turn in their lives with the story set around 15-20 years after the original film. The film’s director said the three pals would now face the trials of a mid-life crisis and will continue to be funny and emotional as they were in the first film. The concept is to explore why people who once thought they got a grasp on life have to face new personal and professional challenges, Hirani said.
He also said that audiences have already witnessed the characters as young engineering students and the sequel will show them at a point where life poses them other questions. The director is currently writing the screenplay with long time collaborator Abhijat Joshi. Hirani says the script has been developing and the narrative is still being worked on to make sure it does not let the audience down as they have high expectations for one of Hindi cinema’s most favourite films. Earlier this year, Aamir Khan had announced that 3 Idiots 2 was in the works. It is “unusual” and “wonderful,” he said, adding that it’s very funny and has as much emotional resonance as the original did in the decade it had been out. The actor also avers that he will once again take on his iconic role of Phunsukh Wangdu or Rancho.
It is believed that the sequel will feature the same cast, which includes Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor Khan, and will be helmed by Hirani again as the director with Vidhu Vinod Chopra as the production house. An official production schedule has yet to be released, but it has been reported that the film is currently in the pre-production stage. 3 Idiots entered the mainstream in 2009 as a cultural phenomenon due to its sharp criticism of the Indian education system, brilliant performances and its evergreen message of passion over societal expectations. The movie still remains hugely popular, and the sequel is among the most-awaited Bollywood films of this year.
